Introduction to Hairdressing

Free Training Programme

If you’re creative and love working with people, hairdressing could be a great career for you.

This online programme has been designed to introduce you to the hairdressing industry and help you become ready for employment.

Over four weeks, you’ll learn about different aspects of hairdressing, career opportunities, how a salon operates and employers’ expectations. You’ll develop your communication and presentation skills and meet hairdressers at different stages of their careers.

The programme will run on these dates in 2021:

  • 15 February to 12 March
  • 15 March to 16 April
  • 3 May to 28 May
  • 31 May to 25 June

Career opportunities

On successful completion of the programme, HITO’s Sales and Training Advisors will help connect you with our network of employers. You’ll also receive a Certificate of Completion.

Criteria

Anyone looking for a new role or career as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic is welcome to apply, including Ministry of Social Development (MSD) jobseekers.

Applicants need to be:

  • 18 years or over
  • a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
Programme outline and requirements

The programme runs from Monday to Friday for four weeks. You’ll attend a one-hour online tutorial each day and be expected to complete workbooks and activities in your own time to hand in each week.

You’ll:

  • hear how top hairdressers built their careers
  • meet people around the country
  • study hairdressing techniques in online tutorials
  • find out what employers are looking for
  • complete hairdressing theory workbooks
  • share your creativity in individual projects.

Tutors Juliet O’Hara and Claire McFarlane bring over 30 years combined experience in the hairdressing industry including training and mentoring apprentices working towards their qualifications.
