Barbering Unit Standards Review

HITO’s Industry Advisory Panel have reviewed the barbering units below as part of the regular review cycle and made amendments to better reflect the requirements of barbers and their customers.

We are seeking your feedback before confirming the amendments with NZQA. This document contains the reviewed and amended units. The proposed changes are summarised below. Please provide feedback via the form below before July 19.

Reviewed Barbering Units - Draft for Consultation - June 2019

2886 – Design and shape beards and moustaches

  • Range extended in outcome 2.2.
  • Amendments made to 1.1, 3.2 in regards to timing.
  • Beard and moustache to be performed.
  • Timeframe 10 mins per service if completed separately otherwise 20 mins if using one client.

10645 – Describe the development of barbering

  • Components of 19807 added into this unit – outcome 1 .2 and 1.5.
  • Removal of class structure  from 2.1.
  • Lift from level 2 to level 3.
  • Original outcome 2.2 and 2.3 have been removed to create  a new 2.2.

10646 – Apply initial barbering techniques

  • Propose to expire, most of this content is now in unit 10648.

10647 – Wet shave facial hair using a cutthroat razor

  • Title change.
  • Increase in credit value.
  • Addition to purpose statement made.
  • Range added to guidance information to include one full wet shave and one partial shave.
  • Amendments made to outcome 1 and 2 this includes knowledge from unit 19807.
  • Amendments made to outcome 3, 4 and 5.

10648 – Complete a haircut using barbering techniques

  • Purpose statement made to include demonstrate knowledge of haircutting using barbering techniques.
  • Now 4 haircuts  of which 3 must include a blow wave.
  • Guidance information has been amended for better clarity.
  • An additional outcome has been included to cover the knowledge element of 10646. Also included in this knowledge element is bones outlined in trichology.
  • Evidence required of on example of solid form, uniform, graduation, and/or increase layer or a combination of these.

10649 – Apply barbering services under workplace conditions

  • Purpose statement amendments made to complete a chemical reformation service.
  • Guidance information amendments made.
  • Amendments made to outcome 1 and 2.
  • Outcome 3 removed as this outcome has been added to unit 10645.
  • Level reduced from level 5 to level 4 to best reflect the changes made.

19805 – Blow dry hair using barbering techniques

  • Increase in credit value.
  • Extended timeframe. 

19806 – Consult with client for barbering services and analyse hair and scalp conditions

  • Propose to expire as covered in other practical units.

19807 – Describe the fundamentals of wet shaving

  • Propose to expire – knowledge added to unit 10645 and 10647.

19808 – Select and maintain barbering tools and equipment

  • Minor amendments to range, and extension of range in 2.1.
  • 2.3 and 2.5 removed.

28017 Manage conversation and interactions to create and maintain an atmosphere suitable for a barber shop

  • Title change.

28018 Demonstrate knowledge of removing product build-up from hair

  • Classification change.
