10 WAYS TO REDUCE WASTE IN YOUR SALON

Reduce Your Rubbish: Take control of your rubbish from the start. Reduce the amount of rubbish your salon generates by buying concentrates and refills or buying in bulk - these give you more products for less packaging and less packaging means less rubbish.

Get in the Loop - Recycle: Contact your local council and find out what and how to recycle in your area-i.e. magazines newspapers, paper, cardboard, aluminum, steel cans, colour tubes, plastic bottles, aerosol cans (hair spray).

Hair is Compostable: Did you know that hair is compostable? Yes hair can be put in compost bins or worm farms for recycling. Simply collect the hair and any food scraps in a separate bin and empty them into the compost bin - where they will naturally help to breakdown with the other garden and food waste and make a healthy, rich soil.

Plastics are Recyclable – But which ones: There are 9 different grades or categories of plastic. To find out what the grade of plastic is, look for a number inside the recycle triangle. Check with your council if this grade is recyclable. If you are unsure about the grade, contact your supplier and check with them.

Golden Rubbish: Not all plastic products can be recycled (yet), but could they be reused? Check with local kindergartens or primary schools if they would like some of your empty bottles or containers for an arts and craft activity?

Load it Up: Use Washing Machines and dryers only on full loads - a full load uses less water and energy per kilogram than a partial one. Try to only use these appliances when they're full to save overall water use.

Use Water Efficient Products: Such as washing machines, basin heads, toilets and taps to save water. A low-flow shower head can reduce water flow by nearly half while still producing the same pressure - Look out for the water efficiency labels on products. More efficient hot water use can also save you money on your power bill.

Switch it off: Turn appliances off at the wall and switch off lights when leaving the room. Even when on standby, appliances use a surprising amount of energy.

Use Hot Water Wisely: Check the insulation around your hot water cylinder, if it's warm to the touch then it’s losing heat. Also check the pipes around the cylinder for leaks. Consider installing a solar water heating system or a heat pump water heater and you could save money on your power bills. Towels can be laundered in a cold wash but will still be clean.

Look for the Energy Star Label: Any appliance with this label is the best in its class. You can refer to the appliance guide and check the energy use.
