Shazly Rasheed started salon@shazly in Lower Hutt in 2005. All salon@shazly’s senior stylists are fully qualified and two staff are currently undertaking apprenticeships.

“All my senior stylists are fully qualified. It’s difficult finding qualified senior stylists so instead I’m training my own staff so they can step up into these roles.”

“By training apprentices I can be confident that the skills they bring are the ones that work best for my business.”

“The great thing about apprenticeships is that you get exactly what you want. You can mould them so that they understand your business.”

“By training them now with the skills that my business will need in the future I can maintain and even increase my competitive advantage.”

“Training staff results in a better job, happier clients, improved staff retention and helps grow my business,” she says.

“We need to invest in young people for the future. I know that it is expensive to train apprentices but they are very important to my business growth because it is the way my salon ends up getting its core employees.”

“Apprentices build up great relationships with clients when they’re doing things like shampooing and colouring their hair. By the time a senior stylist leaves, clients already know the apprentice and are nearly always happy for them to become their stylist.”

“I truly believe apprenticeship training is the only way we can grow our industry. It’s important in creating a professional image. Training staff results in a better job, happier clients, improved staff retention and helps grow my business.”

”If more salons invested in apprenticeships not only would the salons benefit, but our industry would grow.”
