Cheryl Schofield
Navarjo, Whangaparoa, Auckland

Cheryl has owned Navarjo for 7 years, and has employed apprentices since day one. Three of her six staff are apprentices.
“It is difficult attracting qualified senior stylists and that’s why I am investing at the other end – in apprentices.”
“Taking on apprentices is hard work, and you have to be consistent but I love seeing them achieve. I love seeing their excitement, and I love seeing them get ahead and getting a really good trade behind them.”
“Having apprentices is a win-win as it helps me stay in touch and keep my skills where they need to be to stay on top of my game. Apprentices are sponges for information and they help ensure I am on my game too.”
“If you don’t have an apprentice then you can get slack and fall behind.”
“In the last two years HITO have really lifted their game and are doing a great job not only at getting apprentices on board, but on encouraging completions.”
“We have an awesome relationship with our HITO Sales and Liaison Manager. It’s great to have someone on the other end of the phone who knows exactly what we need. It’s a triangular relationship – HITO, myself and the apprentice all work together towards the same shared goal.”
“The Employer Professional Development Workshop (EPD) was fantastic. It was great meeting up with people in the industry and networking with colleagues. Normally we only see each other at competitions so it’s great catching up and knowing we are all in the same boat. I’d recommend them (EPD) to anyone.”
“As hairdressers we really need to lift our game. It used to be that if you dropped out of school then you became a hairdresser. Now we are a professional industry and we need to present ourselves as such.”
