How to Apply

Signing up an apprentice is easy

1.  Hire an apprentice

Finding the right person can be tricky. You can advertise on this website or look for people who are advertising themselves.

2. Sign an employment contract

As an employer you must have a signed employment agreement with your new employee. HITO must see this before we can set up a training agreement with you and the apprentice.

3. Download and complete a training agreement

Go to our downloads page and download and print a blank training agreement. Complete it as much as possible.

4. Call your regional HITO contact

HITO has seven regional managers across New Zealand. Contact your nearest one by phone or email and they will arrange to come and visit you and your new employee.

5. Have a meeting

You, the employee and the HITO manager will sit down together and go through the application form and make sure that everything is right to move forward.

6. Sign the training agreement

Once you, the apprentice and the HITO manager have signed the training agreement, you are now committed to ensuring that the apprentice has all of the help and support to make sure that they complete their apprenticeship and become a qualified professional.

Important Information for Employers

As an employer, you have a responsibility to train or ensure that training takes place for your apprentice. With that in mind it is important that you fulfil the following criteria before taking on an apprentice:

  • You or someone in your salon MUST be qualified.
  • Your premises must be safe.
  • You must be able to provide the apprentice with the right tools to do the job.
  • You must allow the apprentice to attend off job training.
