This qualification recognises the skills and knowledge required for management or training in the hairdressing industry. It also provides recognition for advanced skills. The core compulsory section recognises the importance of communication skills, interpersonal skills, advanced hairdressing skills and management skills within the industry.
Options for Assessment
In the National Certificate in Hairdressing (Management) there are 12 compulsory unit standards that have to be achieved and 3 strands.
The strands are:
- Assessment of Hairdressing
- Tutoring in Hairdressing
- Salon Management
To meet the requirements of the whole National Certificate you have to complete 12 compulsory unit standards and all of the requirements of one of the strands.
The Assessment strand recognises the skills required by workplace and registered assessors to ensure that judgements they make are in accordance with National Standards and are fair, valid and consistent.
The Tutoring strand offers experienced hairdressers the opportunity for recognition of the skills and knowledge required to train and develop the skills of hairdressing trainees. It acknowledges the need for tutors themselves to be skilled hairdressers and also to be conversant with principles and practices required to provide best practice in a training environment.
The Salon Management strand provides recognition for the more complex skills and knowledge for certain client services and the range of skills and knowledge required to effectively manage the operation of a small business focused on the hairdressing industry.
Entry to this qualification is open, however it is recommended that candidates have obtained a National Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 4), a Trade Certificate in Hairdressing or can demonstrate equivalent skills.
