What is a HITO apprenticeship?

A HITO apprenticeship is the best way for you to become a qualified hairdresser or barber.

You learn in a real salon, with real clients, and you earn a wage from day one so there’s no student loan.

What does an apprentice do?

Being an apprentice means being an employee and working in a salon or barbershop.

At the beginning you will learn the basics like cleaning, customer service, taking bookings and helping others. As you learn and become skilled, you will move onto washing, cutting, colouring and styling.

You will collect evidence of your skills while working at your salon and attend training at a polytechnic or other training provider.

It’s a commitment

A hairdressing or barbering apprenticeship is about your employer committing to sharing their real skills, knowledge and experience with you every day. As an appretnice you will learn every day on the job and collect evidence that shows what you have learned.

What does HITO do?

HITO will arrange for you to go to a training provider during the first three years. There you will learn more skills which you will bring back into your job.

We will also visit you regularly during your time as an apprentice to make sure that you’re on track.

We know it’s not always easy juggling your work, life and education at the same time. Becoming qualified takes hard work and commitment. There will be times when it you feel like giving up.

At HITO we love helping people become qualified and we are committed to helping and supporting you through times like this. Remember your goals and get as much help as you need.

How long does it take?

There are no shortcuts to becoming qualified. As the qualification is knowledge and skill based, the harder you work and the more that you know, the sooner you will become qualified.
