Get started while still at school

Everything is done in a salon or barbershop. This is your opportunity to experience life as a hairdresser or barber while you’re still at school!

You to spend up to two days a week in a salon or barbershop, learning on the job and working towards unit standards.

The unit standards are stepping stones for your career. This real life learning will give you an opportunity to decide if hairdressing or barbering is the right career choice for you.

The unit standards also go towards gaining a National Certificate later in your career.

“The HITO Gateway Programme has helped me in many ways. I was able to experience first hand what it would be like in the hairdressing industry. The HITO Gateway Programme has helped me make my decision for 2010. I would like to be part of the Hairdressing Industry and gain an apprenticeship, working towards the National Qualification” – Mary Cressey – Gateway Student

It’s good for you because you:

  • get to try the job.
  • get some useful skills for the future.
  • meet people who can help and support you.

In return you have to:

  • do your best to learn.
  • represent your school positively.
  • respect your employer by following instructions.
  • work safely and don’t put yourself or others at risk.
  • keep a record of your work experience in the training documents.

Getting the most out of your experience is what it is all about and that will only happen if you are committed to doing well.

You should take charge of your own learning by:

  • asking questions.
  • recording your collection of evidence.
  • trying not to cram too much in all at the end.
  • encourage your friends and family to become clients at the salon or barbershop.
  • looking for jobs that need to be done.
  • working on a mannequin if there is a quiet time.

Your school and HITO are there to support you. If you have any problems tell your school career advisor or form teacher first.

All students who take part in Gateway will get a certificate showing what you have achieved.
