Creative people are always in demand
The hair and beauty industries are the most creative and people focused industries to work in.
“It’s all about making people look and feel great.”
It can be difficult to make career choice and we know that sometimes family, friends and school might think that you should go to university and get a real job.
We’re here to let you know that hairdressing, barbering and beauty careers are real careers with great prospects which can take you all over the world and earn you a real living.
It’s not just about the job, it’s a career that leads beyond cutting hair and doing nails.
Tree of careers
If you’re creative, have a keen interest in hair and fashion and want a career that pays while you have a great social life, then becoming a qualified hairdresser or barber could be perfect for you. From day one you can work in a real salon or barbers rather than a classroom and be learning on the job. HITO manage your training through an apprenticeship programmme.
What personal qualities do I need?
You must have the desire and a genuine interest in hairdressing. An eye for detail, a keen interest in fashion and creativity. Being sociable and outgoing also helps as you will be meeting lots of different people. Honesty, reliability, punctuality, motivation and being well groomed are very important. You will also need at least three years secondary and/or tertiary education. A good level of mathematics, art, English and communication skills are important. You may already have some of these key skills and units from your NCEA.
So how do I get started?
The first step in beginning a career in hairdressing is to find a salon willing to take you on as an apprentice. Go to potential salons and make sure it is an environment that you will be comfortable in. If you are still at school you can use the Gateway Programme. Further advice on finding a salon is available at What should I look for in a salon?
Become a qualified hairdresser with a nationally recognised qualification. You will be learning in a real salon and start earning a wage from day one!
What are my career opportunities?
Once you have your National Certificate you can:
- work all over the world
- own or manage a business
- train future apprentices
- work in films, TV, magazines or fashion shows
- work on cruise ships or resorts
