An apprenticeship is a formal training agreement between you and your employer and is registered with the HITO. It is an agreement confirming that your employer will train you in all the skills required for you to gain your hairdressing qualification on the job.

You will collect evidence of your skills while working at your salon. You will be assessed on these skills at off-job training with a training provider, i.e. a polytechnic or private training establishment. You will also attend off-job training during your apprenticeship.

You learn at your own pace during your apprenticeship and you determine how quickly you learn. There are no shortcuts to becoming qualified. But as, the qualification is skill based, the harder you work the sooner you will become a qualified hairdresser.

What are the benefits of getting an apprenticeship?

You will earn while you learn. You will get to work with people who have a wealth of knowledge and have agreed to let you share this. This will mean you will have one-on-one support through your training. You will not need a student loan to pay for your training.

The HITO will pay for approximately 75% of your off-job training fees while you are an apprentice. You will also have the added support from your regional HITO Sales & Liaison Manager for the duration of your training to help with goal setting and to make sure that the training is meeting your needs.
