On Sunday 16 March 2008, the HITO
launched a brand new DVD guide to an exciting career in the
hairdressing industry called 'Can You Cut It'.
The event took place at the Rialto Cinema in Wellington and was attended by over 60 people from the hairdressing industry, government and educational representatives. It was a great evening and was also the official launch of the brand new Modern Apprenticeship scheme. To mark the occasion, the very first hairdressing modern apprentice Catherine Clement and her employer Janine Carse were given a special presentation. The goal of producing the DVD is to present a realistic view of the life of a hairdressing apprentice to people who are interested in following a career in the industry and to encourage apprentices already in training to complete their apprenticeships. The DVD honestly shows the thoughts and opinions of 4 apprentices as they go about their normal day and also follows them as they compete in competitions. One apprentice is also shown at her graduation after completing her apprenticeship. Copies of the DVD will be sent to all schools participating in the HITO Gateway Programme, to salons who currently employ apprentices and to Off Job Training providers so that anyone interested in hairdressing or barbering can get a real life glimpse at the lives of those who are part of one of the hardest working, but rewarding, careers in New Zealand. For your own copy of the DVD, please contact rob@hito.org.nz.
